Apostleship is one of the five equipping positions Jesus set fourth in the church (prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers). {Ephesians 4:11} They are also called the ascending gifts of Christ for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifyiong of the Body of Christ. This is an office appointed by Jesus Christ Himself!
The greek word "apostlos" means "one who is sent". Apostles are those who are sent forth to establish and bring order into the church.
